Looking for a Spencer rifle suitable for skirmishing. Repro is fine, vs. relined original.

Glenn,
For around $700 Larry Romano could perhaps rebarrel it for you, chambered for .56-50, and that would give you a rifle to shoot without destroying its historical value?

Certainly a good thought, but that would rob me of the fun of buying a whole other gun.

Just a note of caution: The ArmiSport reproduction Spencer Rifle is NOT approved for use in the N-SSA's competitive matches. There are some dimensional issues that, to the best of my knowledge, have not yet been corrected by the manufacturer. If anyone cares purchase one they can make the corrections themselves (the standard N-SSA +/- tolerances will apply), and then submit it to the SAC for an individual approval.
The required corrections, as of 2010, are as follows:
1 - Move the bottom barrel band back towards the receiver one inch.
2 - Move the middle barrel band back towards the receiver one inch.
3 - Move the front sight back towards the receiver one-half inch.

Glenn, here is another M1860 Spencer rifle for sale:

Of some 32 specimens examined since 2008, the average price for an original M1860 Spencer Rifle (regardless of condition) is $4,840. Occasionally, you might get lucky and find one cut down to carbine length or converted into a shotgun from $1200-$2000. I seem to recall someone here found one for $400.

Thanks, John- I was wondering if the Taylor's rifle was approved.
As far as originals, is either the model 1860 or the 1865 approved, or just the 1860?

Glenn,
The Small arms Committee will allow both the 1860 and the 1865 Spencer Rifle. The M-1865 Rifle is considered to be a reasonable replica of the 1860. The decision to allow the Rifle in .56-50 was made long before my involvement.
