    Hi Chip,

If you are looking for shooting, you've come to the right place. The N-SSA is first and foremost about competition shooting so any firearm you buy from a skirmisher is likely going to be capable of shooting, unless it is a lemon they are trying to unload.

However, until the Pedersoli P53 came out, all of the reproductions were based on Type IV Enfields which never saw Civil War use. Some people have "defarbed" these reproductions to give them correct lock washers, barrel bands, swivels, and the like. Something to consider if you are interested in having an authentic firearm for reenacting.

The new Pedersoli P53 has largely addressed most of the visual authenticity issues. It is also said to be a fairly accurate shooter. But they are pretty new so you may have a hard time picking one up used.

Of course there are always originals also.

    P53 Long Enfield

Don’t know whether you would be interested in an original P53 Long Enfield but below is a link for a machine-made Barnett (London-made) musket that you might could perhaps convert back to muzzle-loading. Considering right now Dixie Gun Works is running a special for the new Pedersoli 1861 Tower at $875, here is an original for $100 less? Heck, one could even buy this rifle and also fit it out with one of Hoyt’s new .451 Kerr barrels ,and have it much the same as Kerr had designed his sharpshooter rifles to have interchangeable barrels (.577 and .451). Hoyt may even be able to help you out with a new muzzle-loading barrel with one of his new Enfield breech-pieces. Of course, if you want an Enfield with all the other hand-made non-interchangeable features like are found on the “Tower” marked Enfields, maybe you will be better off with one of the replica Enfields.
