Hi Jon,
I shoot a Tom Nixon built '41 from original parts (Hoyt lined barrel), that was modified to be a Mounted Artillery version - with long range rear sight, and 1855 rifle front sight. No bayonet lug, and long nose cap. It was originally like the Pedersoli version - tombstone rear blade sight and tiny brass front sight - neither one adjustable. Original barrel relined in 7-land/groove in .540. Shoot the Edington Wilkinson II sized to .539 over 43gr Goex 3F lubed with MCM. It's an excellent shooter and has been my primary skirmish musket for the last 12 years.
There are many variations of the M1841 - perhaps John Holland can weigh in, but each configuration has different elements - long vs short nosecap, short vs long range rear sight, bayonet lug (different types) or not, socket bayonet or some had a machined groove for snellen (sp?) bayonet with benton screw-type rear sight, etc, etc.... cannot combine these elements ad-hoc, they are all specific configurations. The Pedersoli version is the basic, standard issue, M1841 and I believe was the most common. Original barrels had very deep rifling optimized for a patched round ball - and does not work well with minie or wilkinson-type expansion bullets.
