I have come across a firearm I need some info on, more than I can get from the internet. It is a smaller version of the 1861 or 1863 Springfield and I was told it was a "cadet rifle". It is .58 caliber, front and rear sights, marked US on the but plate but no other marking such as proof marks or armory except for the standard eagle on the lock plate and the date 1884. I am guessing it is a standard musket, shortened in the barrel and butt and provided to one of the many military schools of the late 19th Century. It appears to have been little fired, the lock functions perfectly. If anyone can provide any additional information on this firearm including its approximate value (NRA Very Good) I would very much appreciate it.
