I've added a letter extract from the Morning Chronicle (London), Monday 14 May 1855, to the Research Press blog.

Life in a Crimea Rifle Pit

It provides an interesting first hand account of life in a rifle pit during the Crimean War. Of particular note is the long range marksmanship with the then newly issued Enfield rifle, together with comment on shooting in conjunction with a spotter whilst firing upon gunners.

I trust this is of interest, giving as it does some impressions of the capabilities of the Enfield rifle.

Good stuff. Original accounts like this are fantastic reading. Also, the guy 150 years ago hitting his targets at 1000 yards with an Enfield explains away my lack of success... my Springfield! It ain't just me after all, it's the gun! Clearly, only an Enfield could hit those stupid white tiles at 100 yards. I should have known it! Mmm-hmm, yep. Totally the gun's fault, proven 150 years ago in Crimea.

Seriously though, fun & informative, appreciated the link! Lots of good info there.

Cool read. I like how they were shooting at each other counter-sniper style and dropping bullets right into the revetments where each of them were hiding, they would just duck when they saw the puff of smoke from the other guy.

Except his buddy who didn't move quick enough and the bullet when through his hat. Didn't say if his head was in it.
