LG&Y 1863 percussion musket questions...

Hi All,

I am a newbie to the group so please forgive any errors on my part as far as manners.

I am considering selling a Civil war musket that I have here.

It is an LG&Y 1863 percussion musket that I bought in New Oxford Penna, just outside of Gettysburg in 1976. It is in very good condition, with just a bit of "patina" (read rust).
I am posting a few photos, but if it helps, I can send more to those who can help me out here.
I am wondering about the value (without having to pay $40. for the information, thank you) and also where I would have to go to get the best price for this old gem.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Springfield Armory supervised the manufacturing and distribution of the Model 1861 muskets. In order to fulfill shortages, production was sub-contracted to a number of private manufacturers. The "Special" Model 1861 contract represented a transition from the Model 1861 design and incorporated many of the features eventually adopted in the Model 1863 regulation, namely the contoured hammer, flat bolster and removal of band springs. Lamson Goodnow & Yale Co., Windsor, Vermont produced approximately 50,000 muskets under this contract. Musket was designed as a single shot .58 cal. rifled muzzleloader, iron buttplate, contoured hammer, bolster is milled flat eliminating the clean out screw, two leaf sight, three barrel bands are rounded with tightening screws secured by internal springs, two strap hooks on trigger guard and second band, ramrod is tulip head with straight shank and threaded end, iron nose cap. Lock is marked "1863" behind the hammer, with eagle over "US", and "L G - & Y / WINDSOR - VT - " (letters are italic) in front, eagle on bolster. Barrel is marked "VP" over eagle head, and "1863". Buttplate is marked "US". Three bands each marked "U". Cartouche in wood on the left side indicates government inspection, additional inspector mark the barrel. Round barrel length 40in.

They WILL sell this gun to someone bidding on the floor at the auction OVER someone who has placed a bid of $1200-1500 on the internet auction site!!!! Happened to me twice and a few friends I told about this site. We all lost the same week to bidders on the floor.

It's best to search the internet for the answers. I typed in "LG&Y sale" and page after page of listings came up. Just read through them and compare yours until you get a feel for what they are asking as opposed to what they are actually selling for.

I have an LG&Y original that is in similar condition, maybe just one grade better and I payed $1,500.00 five years ago. Hope this helps.
