Maynard Ignition problem

Hello Everyone, What I have is a ignition problem when shooting My Maynard the very first shoot, first my Maynard is a Romano #2. This Carbine is new to me, once I get the rifle to shoot the first time it is good for the rest of the day, there is no obstructions in the nipple or passage way. I am shooting 3f GEOX. I have tried different caps but not much change. This is a really good shooting Gun except for this problem, I have tried to Call L. Romano but he is really hard to get. Has anyone had this problem and found a cure.

Also inspect your cases to be sure the flash hole in the bottom is clear. If you tumble your cases to clean them, be sure a tiny amount of medium is not lodged in the flash hole.

I Used to have that problem with my Smith. I solved the problem by blowing compressed air through the nipple after reinstalling it when cleaning. This ensures that the flash channel is clear all the way through. I have had no further problem since I started doing this.

I run a dental tool wire through the base of each case before reloading. Haven't had a misfire since. You didn't mention it but you do bust four or five caps on the gun before live firing right??

Get ya a can of the compressed air they use to blow off your computer keyboard. It has a straw with it like WD-40. And just blow out the flash channel before you go to the line. Since your problem is with only the first shot the problem wouldn't be tumbling media stuck in the bottom of the cases.

Regarding your first shot issue. A few questions, did you get the gun new? Did it always have this problem? If it is a developed problem, how long has
the gun been used?

Please do an inspection of the pocket under the base of the nipple. See if there is a small crater forming. I suspect you will see some type of erosion in this area which could cause the fire to bounce and not flow. On a new gun, a drill point hole will also cause this problem. The after the first shot
working tells me that the fouling is helping with the flow of the flame front, it should get worse in time.

Hello and thanks for all the advice, I have Jury Duty this week so no time to see if problem is fixed, I did contact L. Romano and got some advice from him and new parts order. I will let everyone know results of my next shooting experience.

Hello, I finally got the time to test out all the suggestions that I received, I cleaned both my rifle and the brass, did a inspection under the nipple and there is pitting but not bad, I loaded per L. Romano suggestion, which is to breech seat the bullet, I used three different caps. ( CCI, Vorder-Zund #1081 and Vorder-Zund #1081FL ). I did this test over three different days, cleaned the rifle the same, this way I new the barrel was cold and tried to duplicate the same conditions.

Results:

CCI Five straight misfires before ignition, and another three misfires during the ten shot test.

Vorder-Zund #1081 One misfire and than ten straight shots

Vorder-Zund #1081FL No misfires and ten straight shots

My rifle seems to like the Vorder-Zund #1081FL the best, I don't know if there is any difference except for the wings. I plan on shooting the coming week, if there is a change in results I will let everyone know.

My #2 will occasionally misfire on the first round. When this happens I replace the round and that resolves the issue. For me, the issue seems to be in the ammo. I think there may be a piece of BP that is fouled and lodged in the fire hole. Running a nipple pick in the fire hole clears this up also. I suspect that there are several possibilities here.
