How do you guys like the lyman old style mini ball moulds. I just got one and the base on them looks a little thick but I have not used it yet so I thought you guys that have used them could tell me if you like them its the 575 type.

I have one of the older Ideal 575213 Old Style with the thick skirt. It key holed at 30 yards with a 45 grain charge. :shock: I might have done better with a heavy charge. It won't do me well for skirmishing.

One thing I can say about it is that the external appearce of the bullet is the closest to orininal minnies that I have seen.

If I could get someone to make me a different base plug to give it a deeper, thinner skirt, it might shoot OK.

I currently shoot a Rapine 580460 old style minie in my M1861 Springfield but back in the days when I shot a repro Zouave rifle my bullet of choice was the Lyman 575213OS. However, I had a Lyman 575213 New Style base plug modified so it would fit in the Old Style mold blocks. The resulting old style bullet had a thinner skirt, deeper cavity and weighed about 400 grains. With 48 grains FFFg it shot reasonably well.

I just got a Lyman 575213 (it does not say OS - old style). I casted about 50 rounds last night and the bullet came out to .5745. This is smaller than I expected but actually works great. I have an early 1974 Parker Hale 1858 that is stamped Birmingham England .577 but mic'ed at .575. I am curious about what others have for the general weight of the Lyman bullet for the 575213 mold. My Hodgen .580 weighs out to .404.5 grains. The .575 weighs out to .439.5 grains. I am going to shoot this round this weekend and I will post the results.

I have found that if you modify the 575213, and shorten the base pin, it works very well in barrels with 1:56 twist or a little faster. This bullet also has very good down range flight. The modifications make the bullet cast at about 450 grains which hleps with a lower charge to upset the base into the rifling. If anyone is interested I can offer these modifictions.

I am not much at makeing modifications but I do know someone who can do them for me.

I shorten the mould and make a new core pin, and add it to a self centering CAM Plate. About $35

I have one of Charlie's re-worked moulds with the centering core pin. Well worth the money.
