    Looking for rare repro bayonet

Just found out that there were once reproductions made of the rare M1855 Snell Saber-Bayonet for the M1841 rifle and now I WANT one (but they appear to be rare too now). A friend said this forum would be a good place to ask for help...let me know what you can about these repros and if anyone has a lead on one for sale! Best to get me at F_Trooper@yahoo.com

    Thanks,

    Chris -

Welcome to the N-SSA's Bulletin Board.

Unfortunately you just missed a Snell Bayonet with the scabbard which was posted & sold a few of days ago on this site. Hang around, they do show up from time to time.

    Happy hunting!

Re: Looking for rare repro bayonet

If I remember correctly it was Phil Spraugy that sent an original off somewhere and had them made. The quality was off the chart. They fit just like an original.
Chris(another Chris) sold his for $150 bucks! That was a steal. ====> viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14607
There weren't that many repro's made either.

Check Auction Arms under the Civil War category. I think they have listed what you are looking for. It's item #10146495. Can't comment on the quality or anything, I just happened to see it while looking over their site.

    Good luck

The Auction Arms listing for the bayonet and scabbard sought here is for sale by Big Mick.

Re: Looking for rare repro bayonet

Thanks for the leads so far, the one on auction arms is not really a Snell (though the manufacturer calls them that). Its a M1855 with a barrel adapter, so it LOOKS like a Snell. Snells have a small turnkey on the crossguard that attach then to the barrel. I appreciate the help.

    Chris -

Very observant! That particular bayonet is even a poor representation of an 1855 Rifle bayonet, with the straight heavy blade, etc.

The reproductions that Phil Spaugy had made were really nice, but they were done a long time ago. They'll never be mistaken for an original by a bayonet collector, but they're still the best repro ever done.

The term "Snell" is a more modern term. Harper's Ferry called them "Ring Bayonets".

I guess now I know why Jackie calls you an encyclopedia of worthless information. I still refused to believe that you are a shiny sh-- collector, however.....
