    CapLock rifle ID (?)

    My neighbor, who's husband recently died, has this old relic cap-lock rifle (pics below), says it belong to her husband's grandfather, and want to find out its worth. It has no markings except dole "00" stamped at various locations: on the trigger guard, side plate, and all of the stock banding, nothing else. 36" Barrel; 52" overall. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Lorenz , 1854 import.54 or .58. Worth is not much as a skirmish weapon, collector value might be $600 up depending on condition of bore and lock the rear sight does not look right, either replacement or missing parts, etc. These were secondary issue and were not of great quality unlike the P-53 Enfields for example. Tim Prince at College Hill Arsenal prefers imports of this type, he might be better equipped to help.

    Hope this helps;

    The identification is correct. But they were the next most imported longarm into the South after the Enfield. Over 100,000 came into the South with the North importing them as well. While it may not have much value to the shooters it does have value to collectors. Tim Prince would be a good one to contact. Here is a link to one on another dealers website.

    Thanks for this valuable information, much appreciated. My neighbor decided she will keep and hang it over the mantle. Regards,
