    Spencer Carbine Petition

I am just curious who would sign a petition to preserve the Spencer Team Event at Nationals?

Who would be okay with allowing reproduction Spencers in 45LC and 44-40 in order to make the spencer event more accessible?

Below is a Poll to collect responses:

    Respectfully,
    Garrett

    Spencer

Yes we need to expand Spencer competition. I believe that allowing 45LC in competition for Spencers is no different than allowing 45LC for the Henrys, since Henrys did not shoot 45LC in the Civil War they were 44-40. Also trying to find 50 caliber brass is impossible since there are no suppliers out there.

For some reason there are members who are trying to eliminate the Spencer team competition even though they shoot at the same time the Henrys shoot, there would be no time savings for the Nationals. As a side note there is a proposal that will be presented to the Board this weekend to do exactly that, the reason, we only have 4 Spencer teams that shoot. Again there would be no time savings at the Nationals. Also looking at the info that will be available to the Board this weekend the Spencer teams are the only teams that have consistently had a 100% show up rate on the line. There is also a statement that eliminating the four medals awarded to the Spencer team would save money. I'm sorry but if those four medals are going to save the N-SSA from going bankrupt we definitely have bigger problems to solve monetarily.

    My two cents,

    Kevin Herrick, Commander 46th Illinois

Its quite literally impossible at this point to get 56-50 brass.

I think its a good decision to bring in another caliber. It was the most popular repeater of the civil war and the least popular repeater of the N-SSA, which is a byproduct of the issue that we cant get 56-50 brass anymore.

Id prefer we keep things going in 45 long colt and 44-40 rather than losing the Spencer matches. It was Abe Lincolns favorite gun and same gun that booth fled town with.

There is only one medal awarded for the Spencer match. So for the cost of a few bucks. The N-SSA will have less shooters on the line and alienate those that have spent so much time and money getting their Spencer`s competitive.

I agree with Kevin and others on this. We should not abandon the Spencer competition, we should encourage expansion of it. I can tell you our new team is hard at work planning to field a Spencer team at the Spring Nationals.

As others have said there is virtually no 56-50 brass out there now. I've gotten lucky in acquiring a few. The hawks on gunbroker are charging over 10 dollars a case which is ridiculous. I support the petition to keep the match going and allow others the fun of shooting the spencer even if it's not the original caliber.

"...since Henrys did not shoot 45LC in the Civil War they were 44-40."

The Henrys used the .44 Flat rimfire cartridge.

Starline 50-70 will work reliably cut down to length
I use them with a centerline block. Ch4 had dies in stock at one point and can be ordered. Outside lubed heads need a additional bullet seater.

Problem is you cannot get .50-70 brass now either, at least not at a reasonable price. Im sure there's guys who have hundreds up on hundreds of cases squirreled away from decades of shooting but for any new Spencer owner there's almost now way to get enough ammunition to get through a skirmish. Maybe score a handful of cases second hand on gunbroker (at hugely inflated prices) but that's it
