WTB - 1864 Springfield nose cap and mounting screw

    Title says it all.

I'm helping a friend restore a garage sale find into an 1864 Springfield Artillery Short rifle.
He needs the correct nose cap and mounting screw.

    Thanks,

Bob, I may have what you need. It's an original nose cap that's been opened up a bit. Not sure if it's for a short rifle or a Richmond carbine. I can send you a photo of how it fits on a full length barrel (loosely).

The short rifle has a 32" barrel. I'd suppose the nose cap fits about 24" from the breech. I wonder if a full length 3 band barrel is narrower than a short rifle at the 24" mark. That might explain the need for a wider opening in the nose cap.

Sending you a PM to discuss...

Replied to your PM. Some cutoff barrels were retapered to take a bayonet, most weren't. If your barrel is not retapered, this cap fits pretty well at 24". If it is retapered, there's a pretty good gap on the sides.

Turns out this barrel is a cut down 3 bander. I'm confident your nose cap will work great.

    Thanks.

    Thanks,
If you are still looking I have an original. I will check to see if I have the screw to go with it. Also Lodgwood has them in stock as well.
