Outside the tool= the very best way to keep rust off is to use linseed oil- it creates a protective film- very good for tools and long tern storage- if you are using on a frequent basis- Fluid Film- in Aerosol can- it is the best i have found in living in a salt air enviroment. you spray it on- let it film over and your tool will not rust even if left in the elements.
Inside the bore- i have found the best is GunZilla- its a cleaner and oil- Bruce Cobb turned me on to it- it works very good. 711 spray oil works well too- its just an oil- no solvent- we were turned on to that when Rick Yates worked at the GE TV plant in Suffolk VA- they used it to spray the circuit boards to prevent rust
of course there are other oils and solvents that work too- US Military Artic Oil is another very good solvent/oil- but hard to come by ad expensive as well. Never had much use for WD40 as it is thin- and stuff will rust if exposed to salt air.
just some rambling thoughts
