    Erma Galagher

A friend of mine who skirmished with the 2nd Maryland Artillery many moons ago, is considering selling an Erma made Gallagher. It has never been fired. Anyone have an idea on what a fair price would be - and how much work would be needed to make it skirmish worthy?

    Thanks.

Probably similar to a Pietta Smith condition for condition. As original, they are not ideal for skirmishing. They have a fast twist barrel that doesn?t really work well with skirmish level ammo, although people keep on using them. To make it ideal, the barrel would have to be lined, and of course it would need a tall front sight.

I do not know if they have any collector value. The barrels were made from re-purposed surplus 13.2mm Luftwaffe machine gun barrels. That caliber was completely obsolete by the 1960-70?s

Always was curious about them in un-altered condition.

Bob Hoyt relined mine to .50 caliber with twist and grooves to shoot The Maynard/Smith bullet. That was around 10 years ago. I?d guess he would get around $225.00 for a reline these days. The Erma cost me $600.00 back then and I immediately sent it to Bob. It shoots very well, but it requires diligent cleaning of the breech with its twist and turn flash channel. Use the hottest caps you can findThe brass is expensive but lasts forever.

I believe it is also permissible to chamber it for smith tubes. Plastic or metal

Bob Hoyt advised against it, and I seem to recall that there would be SAC issues if done that way. I think someone referred to it as a Smallagher.

Could be. Mine was done for Gallagher cases 10 years ago.

    My Results

I have an Erma I have played with in the original twist. I found that a harder bullet does better with the fast twist. I think my typical pure lead bullets stripped through the rifiling.
