50 cal powder charge with Moose Mold 515-395

Have question on how much powder any one else is using with Moose Mold 515-395 for a Shiloh Products 50 cal 1863.

Using that mold and Charlie Hahn tubes I can get only 48-50 grains of 2F Goex in the tube. Is that close to what others are using?

Don't have any other 50 cal molds as yet, but I'd like to try heavier loads in the rifle.

when I had a sharps I was using 38g 2f swiss, punched right through any paper or breakable I ever shot at.

what is the reason for wanting more powder,, that might be the question.

u can always just seat the bullet without a tube and get more powder in the chamber, u don't have to have that tube.

I thought the tubes were basically the size of the chamber. The rear of the tube against the breech face. How much more powder could you put into it

I'm using 1.3 Hahn tubes. Some musket chambers are cut deeper than others and can use larger tubes.

    .50 Caliber Sharps Load

I have a .50 caliber Shiloh Sharps rifle which took 1st place in the 50-yard single shot individuals at the last national. I shoot 45 grains of FFg GOEX loose powder behind a NEI ringtail bullet (loaded using a plastic tube). That leaves a little air space in the chamber.

Somewhat similar to Jim's experience. .50 caliber Shiloh Sharps 1859 Infantry rifle, NEI ringtail bullet, 45grs of Swiss FFFg, Lee Shaver's lube (no longer commercially available) intended for black powder cartridge long-range rifles. At one time I had the range record with it - 99 with a bunch of X's - at 50 yards. I don't use Hahn tubes, but I don't shoot it in team matches either.

Another thing to consider is that some of the "Christmas Tree" bullets have a front driving band small enough to fit into the bore, so that the bullet bottoms out on the rifling on the second driving band.

This gives you more room for powder.

Larry Flees sells a bullet mold designed to do this. Works in the Pedersoli Sharps, and even more so in my Shiloh Sharps which has a larger bore diamter.
