Need some help with fitment of Armisport front barrel band stock M1842

We have a new teammate who just picked up an unfired Armisport M1842 with bayonet off of Gunbroker.

The fitment of the front barrel band is astonishingly bad. There is about 3/16th inch gap between the barrel and the barrel bands.

My first thought was that the wood was shaved too much. But the step on the rear barrel band is bearing against the top side of the stock, so it can't sink lower, really.

Perhaps the barrel channel was cut too deep? But then I would expect the barrel to be floating off the stock (it isn't).

I'm not sure how to correct this. Any ideas?

    fitment

Squeeze the band in a vise to desired fit on barrel. After that you may want to put a little Acraglas gel on the underside of stock to fit the band.

It is obvious that the contour of the band is smaller than the barrel. You need to peen the band out to fit the barrel by lightly hammering it on the outside farther back on the barrel until it fits the barrel. You need to take the barrel out of the stock to do this as you will be using the barrel as a mandrel. You can repolish the band after it is fitted. Then you will need to glass bed the barrel higher in the stock to get it to fit properly. Brass bands are much easier to work than steel but with some patience you should be able to make it much better looking and possibly shoot better.

Thanks, John, I will have the fellow remove the barrel and band and see if the barrel fits into the bands. I think I checked this when he was here yesterday but not sure.

I had the same problem when I built my Armisport 42. I ended up picking up a replacement band from someone.
