Peep sight hygene

Thought that would get your interest. This may be old news to some but I found cleaning my peep sight with super dental floss, the kind that has a furry section in the middle, works well. When the peep sight gets dirty from the cap it gets a little ragged around the outside edges. I just run the floss through it and have a clean, clear round peep sight again.

Next question, want to make the peep sight a little larger so I don't have to clean it as often. How large is too large? My guess is a small peep sight would be more accurate but a larger peep sight lets in more light for low light conditions.

Your eyes will tell you. If you're having trouble with light, make the hole a little larger. BTW, I clean the peep with a Q-tip.

All depends on your eyes Tom. My sight is so small you'd think there wasn't one. Most folks sights I look through, look like you could drive a truck through them they appear so big. Then again my eyesite is 20/10

Think I may need to enlarge the size of my peep sight. Using standard drill bits that jump from 1/6 to 5/64" (.061 - .077) seems like too large a jump. Guess I need to look up a machinist supply shop unless someone has a better idea.

That's what I was looking for. Go too large on a peep sight and you lose the depth of field. Will experiment with drilling peep a little larger in .001 steps. Need to find the sweet spot where a clear sight picture, good view of the target and good depth of field come together.

I can see that finding drill bits in .001 incriments mat proove to be difficult, if not expensive. I have a Dremel tool but didn't think of using it. May invest in some of the diamond bits you mentioned and a Dremel drill press unless anyone thinks sight work can be done by hand. My guess is the Dremel drill bits may be too small for a bench top drill press anyway.

The 50 yard peep sight I have on my Remington 2 bander is smaller than a 1/16" drill and is counter sunk on the target side of the sight. That's the sight I have the most trouble with. It gets fouled after awhile from debris when the cap fires. Think I just need to make it a little larger and then maybe enlarge the counter sink too if I need to. The 50 yard peep on my type II Maynard is larger than 1/16" but smaller than 5/64". Both peep sights were put in by a gunsmith. That sight seems to be OK. The location of the 100 yd peep on both guns need to be moved. That's where your tips on using a Dremel tool come in.

I use a larger drill bit in a pin vise to counter bore the peep from the rear and a slight chanfer on the front resulting in a peep that is as thin as paper.
