If the stamp is located on the bottom of the barrel toward the back and visible with the loading lever down it is the manufacturer's mark. This one is Pietta's (F.A.P. Fabbrica Armi F.lli Pietta di Pietta Giuseppe & C. S.r.l.).
I'm not familiar with the stamp as you describe it, can you provide a photo? The 1858 Piettas I've looked at have the diamond logo on the right barrel flat and the FAP is in uppercase letters.

After investigation believed to be Witloe precision. Letters are actually pWi encased in a diamond.
