    1864 Springfield aka 1863 Type 2

Recently acquired a 1864 Bridesburg project, that I am considering making into a "1864 Springfield aka 1863 Type 2" as specified on the SAC build sheet. I am a little confused since it came with a screw type band. (It also has a IN proof on the cut down stock).

Does it just have the wrong band on it?

What is the correct band type for an 1864 Bridesburg?

    Thank you

Jim - The Bridesburg muskets were fabricated in two configurations. One was the Model 1861, and the other was the Model 1863. It was never made as a Model 1864. Although your example is dated 1864 it will be a Model 1863, with split clamping bands and no band springs. For your information, the "IN" stamp on the left side of the stock between the lock screws is for the "Irish Nationals", aka the "Fenian Brotherhood", who invaded Canada twice with intentions of overthrowing the Canadian Government. Those muskets are desirable in their own right, and in my opinion what you have is worthy of a proper restoration.

Thanks John! I guess I will not build this one into a historically questionable "Artillery Model"
