    nipple thread fix

After cleaning my H&P today the 200 year old threads finally gave way. My question, is it safe to use a helicoil to fix? Ive checked on net and some say safe if done right, others say no..its a bullet in front of you face waiting to go off. Any help would be much appreciated. Oh and its for the nipple hole in the breach.

I had the same problem with a British 1840 smoothbore carbine. I took it over to Dan Whitacre last week. In his learned opinion, a heli-coil was not an option. He was able to drill and tap and install an oversized nipple. I would contact him and, if possible bring the barrel over to him for inspection.
