What do you thin of my Sharps bore?

I was cleaning my Pedersoli 1859 Sharps today and I noticed that there is a "scratchy" part of the bore that I can feel, and hear, about 6-8 inches from the muzzle. The ramrod transmits the sound, kind of like the old string-and-a-tin-can telephones. I could clearly here something "scratchy" going on through the ramrod. I brushed (axially) twice with a brass bristle brush, and swabbed until it was clean. Scratchiness was still there.

So I took out my cheap-o $15 borescope and had a look. This thing doesn't work so good as a rifle borsecope as it doesn't see close-up in focus very well. But, it's better than nothing.

I can clearly see that one of the lands has spiral grooves/scratches in it. They seem to come in pairs, like a set of periodic spiral train tracks cutting across one of the lands. My guess is these are tool marks from when the barrel was bored that were not cleaned up when the bore was finished?

    What do you all think?

I have done a tone of load workup work with this gun with the Pedersoli Christmas Tree bullet, a Rapine-style Christmas Tree bullet, and the Eras Gone Richmond Sharps. Accuracy is just so-so. Can't seem to do better than about a 2-3" group at 50 yards off a bench:

    Hi, Steve:

If rifle under warranty, try for barrel replacement.

European barrel makers interchange rifling method terms such as "broach" for cut-rifled.
Please look up YOUTUBE vid of CapandBall Pedersoli factory visit.
My take is that Pederdoli reams, and either cuts followed by button to smooth or reams and buttons.

I have found the same spiral grooves in two of my finest target barrels when reamer scored them and the button process merely ironed both lands and grooves leaving the spiral displayed in grooves and on tops of lands later found with my Hawkeye bore scope.

When one maker was apprised, he said it was a "Monday barrel" and he sent a replacement, but insisted, because of his international reputation, that his U.S. service center, retain the bad one. For what it may be worth, that maker produced barrels for Lones Wigger's and Malcom Cooper's Olympic Gold medal winning rifles. Shows they were not borescoped before assembly!

Sadly, I traded for this gun probably 2 years ago now, so it's likely not going to be honored under any kind of warranty.

I'm going to send it to Hoyt for a reline.

Hell, it might not look that good when you get it back from Hoyt. Shoot it. That target scores 49-2X. Of course you expect a 50-5X. Have you slugged the barrel to check for bore consistency?

I was looking for info on relining and was advised to "Fire-lap" my barrel. I bought the kit and have shot 46 rounds through the barrel. I can see the improvement, and have assembled another 33 rounds. When that is done I expect the barrel to be polished to a point that I won't be able to to improve it any further. We'll see how much that improves my group. If it doesn't help...then a reline might be in order. We'll see.

I have slugged the bore to determine bore size. I'm not very confident that I can detect any bore changes by slugging.

Pretty sure, but I suppose there is no way to be certain. I'll try swabbing the barrel with some Kroil and let it sit and clean it again.

    Steve,
Old timers used mercury. Today use Shooters Choice copper/lead remover or any commercial lead remover,

Barnes CR-10 dose a good job of removing lead and copper. You can get it from Midway. It has a very potent smell so use it outside.
