1863 I Picked it up awhile back, the nipple is out now but the spark channel is still plugged with rust and likely old powder residual. I have kroil soaking the spot. Do any of you have tips on washing this dirt and rusty crud out?
thanks Paul

I had the same problem with mine when I got it. I used very small diameter piano wire and PB Blaster soaking, and just kept working on it for a weak or so. After I could get the piano wire through I switched to welding torch tip cleaners. Of course I was handicapped by the fact that I couldn?t, and still can?t , get the nipple out.
Thanks for your input. Sounds like I?m about doing the same but might be luckier the nipple is out. Kroil is like PB. I was tinkering if a guy had access to a water jet filled with solvent or penetrating oil and jet the crap out of it, would be the ticket. I think the angle is eithe a 90 or both holes set at 45 degrees, so fair
sharp.
tried torch tip cleaners, didn?t go in too far. Isn?t piano wire flexible? How did you push that in there?
Ultrasonic cleaner, evapo rust, and a channel sized drillbit would certainly do it.
Were you able to get the clean out screw out ?

You won?t get the clean out screw out I?m sure. Piano wire is flexible but is hard also. If you keep the tip cut off with dykes you can us it like a chisel od drool bit. Hold it with a small pair of vice grips. You can also use it like a punch. The angles are 90 degrees. You just have to keep working at it.
Drill bit works great held with vice grips

I have been able with the help of a couple of people to get the clean out screw out of at lest 5 different Sharps breech blocks. Heat was used with WD-40 to loosen the rust. After that, it?s easy to clean the flash channel. I would always take the block apart including the clean out screw each time I fired them.
The clean out screw is rusted up. I could try heat too. But the drill idea sounds good and the piano wire. I?ll let you know of my progress
Thanks
Paul
