    Spring Nationals - May, 2020

I wasn?t sure exactly where to post this and forgive me for asking but I am concerned about the upcoming Spring Nationals. I know the Nationals are a little over two months away but with the current World situation, I wondered if there were any contingency plans in place. Rumors abound such as the Coronavirus lasting the rest of the year!

Even though I am only about an hour away, the balance of my team is from Illinois...a 14+ hour trip. With the situation going from bad to worse with the virus all over the news, tenuous job situations and folks worried about their finances, it only makes sense to start checking now.

    Thanks for your responses.

Well Sir your thoughts are the same as the rest of the N-SSA membership.
Several statements / discussions have been in the works.
As of now, all we can do is sit patiently, observe and take directions from
    our N-SSA leadership.
They are on this 24/7, for both our health & safety.
Of course, financial matters play for all of us planning to attend
as well as those who are scheduled to host the skirmishes.

    To all N-SSA "Family",
Be safe and the best to all!

    Hi Dave,

Like Jim said, right now nobody knows.

But if I were a betting man, I would bet that this epidemic is going to be in full swing come May. My bet is most likely Virginia will have a public gathering ban in place.

The infection numbers are becoming meaningless because they still aren't doing widespread testing in the USA. The thing everyone should be watching right now is hospital bed utilization. Right now in NYC they are converting 3 convention center type places into emergency hospitals of like 1,000 beds each. In my state they have been converting hospital parking garages/basements into emergency wards. No one is in them yet, but they are planning on it. Based on the graphs of the death rate, my bet is that within the next 2-3 weeks you are going to see hospitals being overrun. Probably sooner. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. The news coming out of Italy is horrific. Just watched a doctor crying on Twitter describing how they are now pulling ventilators out of elderly patients to give to younger ones and then sedating the elderly so at least they don't suffer as they die. A couple of days ago it was people there over 65 with a comorbidity they would not treat. Now I read it's anyone over 60.

All schools in my state are closed until April 6th. My bet is it will be closed for the rest of the school year.

This is the craziest thing I've seen in my lifetime. It's like something out of a zombie movie.

Nationals is still on. Obviously, things could change.

Applications should be sent in by teams. If the nationals is cancelled, money is to be returned...

Your Commander or adjutant have been advise
d of this approach by executive secretary, Judy.

What the Executive Secretary has distributed to all N-SSA Units:

    March 18, 2020

    Dear Team Commanders and Adjutants,

There have been inquiries regarding the spring nationals. At this time, we will assume it will be held, however this can definitely change. When a final decision is made one way or the other, the official notice will be sent out.

In the meantime, this is the game plan:

    1. Send in your spring nationals registration forms and fees as normal.

    2. If your team will not be attending the spring nationals, please notify me as soon as possible.

    3. The deadline to register has been extended to April 5, 2020. The original date was March 28th. This does not mean mail it on April 5th; it means it must reach me by April 5th.

    4. From this point on, the checks submitted for the spring nationals that have not already been deposited will be held. The paperwork will still be processed and you will receive a confirmation when I have completed the process.

Scenario 1: Nationals is conducted ? the checks will be deposited.

    Scenario 2:

    a) Nationals are cancelled ? The checks will be returned to the teams by regular mail service.

    b) Teams that have paid and their checks have already been deposited will have the opportunity to either receive a refund or a credit voucher towards the fall nationals registration.

    5. Patches and streamers have already been ordered for the 141st spring nationals and will be arriving this week. Should we not have the spring nationals, the patches and streamers will be included with the fall team packets.

    6. Checks sent in for business other than nationals will be deposited on a regular schedule, this would include checks for new members, late members, bills, etc.

Thanks for your patience with all of this.

From what been said by the CDC this is expected to ?peak? mid to late April then start to decline with warmer weather. With most having to put in for leave from work at the beginning of the year and many not being able to change that after the fact. I would think it best serve the members to wait until 2-3 weeks before to make the call for Nationals being cancelled or not.

There?s also a rumor that the smell of burnt black powder kills COVIV-19. 😉

    Well done

It is always good to have a plan B and not just for this current unpleasantness. Like many, I am disappointed about the skirmish situation but knowing that there is plan B gives me and hopefully others, great comfort. Well done at the top, middle, and bottom of the skirmishing food chain.

Stay safe, stay vertical, stay home and do not appear on the Nightly News.

Ok, all this being said, in the event spring is canceled, will the host teams and all future host teams just be bumped ahead to the next Nationals?

I can't speak for the Organization or the BOD, but I doubt it. The Host Teams are selected YEARS in advance so people can plan accordingly.
