    Evaluate Maynard Carbine

Hello all, I?m evaluating a Maynard Carbine this week. I have a few pics of one I looked at over the weekend but need some suggestions on what to look for when looking at it again this week when I go back.

I do already mold my own balls and minie balls. I have a Lee press but not a lubrisizer.

A lubisizer is a good tool to have and use, but mot always necessary. I use a hand sizer and dip my bullets to lube.

Most important: check the flashhole. It should be nice and round and less than 1/16" in diameter for the best condition. Check if it locks up tightly when closing it. It should lock up tight when empty. You should feel tension on the lever when it is about 1 1/4" from closed then snap closed. Check the trigger pull. Some originals can run over 10 lbs. Pull the nipple if possible and check for looseness in the nipple threads. Don't worry about looseness when the action is opened, they are designed that way. If these things check out you will have a good Maynard.

Are you looking for a shooter? or a display?
    Shooter:
Check flash hole, smaller the better
Check "lock up? if loose will need John Blye to mfg new screws and or possibly a new link
Check crown on bore- should be concentric
check bore, the crisper the better
front sight? original or replaced? for shooting may need a higher sight or modify original
rear sight- sight leaves- do they move and work?
then cases, check chamber to ensure cases that are available today can be inserted

these are good for a start when considering a "shooting " maynard.

Plus you could always consult guys like Joe Davenport, John Blye and Bruce Cobb for more details on both shooting and collecting

Yes, I want to shoot it.

So I went to see the one I posted pics of and the bore had some pitting and frosting.
It was NOT tight when closed up w/o a cartridge case in it.
Trigger pull was pretty good, I'm estimating less than 5lb.
I did not have much time as I had to drive back to work after picking up a shotgun there.
Did not have time to pull the nipple and forgot to check flash hole.
Seems that with some work it might be shootable though. just may not shoot well with that bore. not sure.
