    1842 Springfield smoothbore musket question

Were barrel bands for these made of brass as well as Iron? or were the brass bands for the 1842 rifled .69?

The Palmetto Muskets, made under contract for the State of South Carolina are basically Model 1842 Muskets with brass barrel bands. All U.S. Model 1842's have steel or iron barrel bands.

    Re: Palmetto muskets

Although the sexier Palmettos sported brass barrel bands. many legitimate specimens made-do with iron.
