    Hoyt Line Hery, leading, lube...

    Hello,

I have a Hoyt lined Herny that seems to be leading. I am shooting a 1/20 tin lead mix with a mix of 50/50 bees wax and ballistoll. I read about the lube on a BPCR board. It works great for my maynard but not sure about the Henry. It is a soft lube, maybe I need something a bit more stiff?

What about pure lead instead of the tin/lead 1/20 mix? I am new to the Herny thing and need a crash course in Henry loading and shooting!

    Thanks!

    Joe,

Do you find that wheel weights are a mess to work with as far as casting? I always have gotten metal between the blocks and the sprue plate and gored up the top of the mould.

    Thanks!

The temp of the material plays a big issue, I have a Lyman bottom pour that with soft lead I usually have at 7 and casts great minie bullets, as for the henry I have a four cavity 45 mold I use and try my best to keep an even temp across the mold. To stop the mold from fouling up I usually turn the temp down to 6.

I try to shoot stuff as hard as possible.

I've softened my wheel weights down to a BRN 8. My bore slugs at .429" and that's what I size to. Softer lead will hopefully allow the bullet to obturate a little if necessary. No leading problems. I use a mixture equal parts by weight of beeswax, crisco and wax toilet gasket. (unused would be preferred) with a 200gr. Big Lube bullet. Makes a nice pasty lube. Barrel runs clean and leaves a nice lube star on the end of the muzzle.

i just tried the mav dutch man bullet sized to .428 lubed with a combo of winchester sutlers 300 plus and hard and soft bore butter and the bullet is very hard. i had problems with the rapine bullet leading as it had so little lube on it. my bore size is .430 but with size the cartridge is very tight chambering. i get no leading with the mav ducthman bullet and it doesnt keyhole. the rcbs, lyman and rapine bullets dont really carry enough lube for the bp cartridge esp if you are using full charges instead of seriously reduced loads. they are designed to be shot with smokeless powder.

There is only one type of bullet for the Henry, Mike Owsiak Makes the mould 431 sized to a 429 with 29gn of 3f. For the lube use GBS lube found at Miami Valley Suttler at the Nat. For the lead I use Wheel and soft together about 20 to 1

How do I get in touch with Mike. His moulds are wonderful and I have several. Does he usually come to the Nationals?

    Thanks!
