Is this a 4" parkerized finish with a serial number starting with the letter "V"?
If so, this is a Victory model Smith & Wesson, made in the 1942-1945 era. Any standard velocity .38 special load is safe.
Also encountered are S&Ws that were originally chambered in .38 S&W (a shorter, fatter cartridge than the .38 special) that were rechambered to .38 special. This conversion was done to make these revolvers, which were produced the British Commanwealth nations, salable in the US. Generally, .38 special cartridges fired in these rechambered revolvers swell into the larger .38 S&W chamber or sometimes the cases split.

yes Victory model, thanks!!!!
i see remington for instance has the following 38 sp
38spl
38spl+P
38super+P
would these work?

The +P loads are higher pressure, higher velocity loads. Best bet is to stick with the 38 Special loads.

is this wes from AU? or coast guard wes? :P how have you been....?
i have got the 38S&W shooting well. how did you end up with the extra cylinder.? from ww2?
how's your shooting going?
mike
Mike,
I'm the Wes from the Coast Guard. I had the same pistol at one time and could not find rounds for it. My gunsmith had a drawer full of .38 special cylinders and gave me one. Hope everything is going well and have a nice weekend.

Feed it .38 special rounds. Not .38 S&W (a shorter and slightly fatter round). And I'd avoid +P loadings, they are higher pressure.
