    The Confederates had another source for nitrate and saltpeter they also did this in Richmond and more than likely in other city's also.

    Ron -- fantastic article - must reading for all Civil War buffs.
    Frosting on the cake - the great photo of the Southern Belles --- which is in 3D!!!. You don't need an old stereoscope to enjoy this. Reduce the photo to about 5" by 2". Center the thing on your nose at reading distance and then relax your eyes . As you slowly bring your eyes back into focus you'll see three images. The one in the middle is 3D.
    To get the small size, download photo, go to print, pick small print size, rather than go to printer, print to PDF, save.
