    Buttplate screws for my Merrill

If anyone has a pair of original screws that would match the measurements shown in my pics, please IM me. Thought I could use a 1842 buttplate on eBay with screws that were the exact match thread pattern-wise, but seller replied with much longer and wider measurements. Ugh. The top set of screws in the second photo had the right head diameter, but were thinner threads. I had to destroy the heads to remove the screws, as the threads were well rusted in the wood.

Months back I tried them, but had nothing even close. Wouldn't hurt if I tried again.

Very simply, why not repair the original screws that you already have? Weld them up and re-profile to the original size.

PM me your address and I'll send you two that just may work. They are very close.

John H, the side screw I could weld in where damaged and try to cut the head for the screwdriver "channel", but the top screw head is barely a nub. I'd have to reconstruct every angle and in the end throw it away. I kind of like knowing I still have the original screws, even though I f'd them up. Somewhere, someone either in their basement, garage or at a gun show will find a pair that will be the right matches. I have the measurements and photos. Someday.
