FS: M-1874 French Gras Bayonet & Scabbard

For Sale: French Mle. 1874 GRAS BAYONET AND SCABBARD made in 1880

This original French Mle. 1874 Gras bayonet was produced for the French Army by the renowned armory at St. Etienne and saw service from the 1870's until the end of WW I.

The Grass bayonet was introduced with the Grass rifle in 1874. The rifle was a conversion of the Chassepot rifle that had been re-designed to take a metallic cartridge. Both rifle and bayonet remained in use until the end of the First World War and a substantial number were captured and converted by the Germans. There are numerous pictures of these bayonets being carried by the most famous of French Regiments, including the Foreign Legion, Zouaves, Sphais, Tiralleurs Algerienne and Goums.

The Gras was the first French issued bayonet to have wooden grips, lighter than the preceding Mle. 1866 Chassepot yataghan bayonet and it was extremely strong courtesy of the T shaped blade. It was designed for thrusting, in line with the common wisdom of the time which stated that "the point will always beat the edge". This was the last French bayonet to be routinely engraved on the blade spine. This example was made famous as the blade with which Beau Geste and his French Foreign Legion comrades were equipped.

The markings are clearly visible, with the French Army serial number and numerous proof marks on the cross guard and the obverse ricasso. The 20.5 inch T section blade and cross guard with its hooked quillon is in excellent condition. The hilt is in similar condition, the brass pommel and the leaf spring and press button are verdigris aged (if functions as designed) and as good as I have ever come across. The wooden grips do show evidence of use. The blued steel scabbard is in good original condition. The finial ball is proof marked.

It's been literally sitting around for decades, it needs to go to someone who can use it for their collection, or who will simply appreciate it for its historic value.

PRICE DROPPED TO MOVE - Asking $70.00, buyer pays shipping/handling.
