    Maynard Peep Sight

I've been shooting with a former teammate's Maynard this summer, it's a nice gun, but the holes in the rear sight are humungous! The 50 yard sight is 2.73mm and the 100 yard sight is 4.35 mm. How big should these peep holes be?

Big enough for you. Might have to should a bunch of guns at the nationals then figure it out from there? you start small and can always open it bigger til you have a sight picture that suits you.

Sorry, can't, and more to the point, WON'T do metric.
I start out at 3/32" and adjust according to how it looks. A lot depends on how far your eye is from the rear sight. A barrel mounted rear sight would need a larger hole than a tang sight.
When I started using peeps, a friend said that your eye naturally finds the center of the peep so you can concentrate on the front sight. You can improve the amount of light that passes through the peep by chamfering the back side of the hole.

    peep hole sizes

Regarding peep hole sizes. For my customers I start with either .05 or .076 age depending. I also have reamers in about .002 size increases. What is important is to have a sharp edge and a true round hole. This makes a huge difference when looking at the front sight. The hole location in the leaf is also important to avoid ghosting.

The sizes you reference appear to be excessively large in my opinion.
