    Calvary Model Smith Carbine Sling

Just got my Pietta Smith Calvary Model yesterday. I wanted the Artilary model but the one I got was the only one offered on GB. So tell a Newbe guys how does the sling on the Calvary model work with the side bar and ring? I’ve seen pictures of reproduction slings and they look like belts with a metal clamp. Did they wear it like a belt around their waist while on a horse and clamp the sling onto the ring on the side bar?

The sling that was used went over the soldier's shoulder and the carbine was attached to the sling with the hook that was affixed to the sling.

I remember a leather horse collar device that the muzzle of the carbine would fit into. Without this leather collar the Carbine would flop around and hit both man and beast as the soldier rode from point A to point B. I had a Maynard with a well worn area near the muzzle rubbed by this collar. The rubbing and/or Nature caused noticeable pitting to the surface of the barrel through contact.

Here is the muzzle thimble, socket, boot; it has several names. It attaches to the harness.

Having been on Social Security for about 4 years now, I appreciate the "young fellow" comment!

By the way, the proper spelling is "cavalry." "Calvary" is where Christ died for our sins.

What you are going to need is a Gaylord Sling which GOES ACROSS THE SHOULDER. DGW sells the sling belt, but I don't know where you can get the roller snap hook that goes on it.

The Gaylord Sling is only practical when you are on horseback, You can't use the Gaylord sling when marching on foot, as the muzzle of your carbine will be dragging the ground.

From my little museum. To be accurate the carbine sling buckle should be at the trooper's back.

I think his name was Tommy Johnson right off the bridge, his shop was in Richmond, Didn't he make and sell them. I have one and I believe that is who I bought it from.
