    1842 Springfield question

    Hey guys,
Just got my hands on a 42 Springfield. I plan on doing some shooting this weekend. Quick question. I'm going to be using FFF powder. How many grains of powder do you guys recommend? Thank you!

That would depend on whether it is a smoothbore, or a rifled musket.

If it's a smoothie, I shoot a .678 RCBS Round ball, roughed up between two files (well, I don't use files anymore I use a ball roller, but you can use files), double-dipped in Lee Alox, pushed with 70 grains of 3F Goex. Off a bench at 25 yards this will shoot a clover-leaf group.

Mr. Gadget...that’s a hefty powder charge. I’m shooting 678 ball, roughed with files, then boarded and rolled in little bit of Alox. 45 grain of 3 F Swiss.

I'm a big boy as you know.... I take my hits. Sometimes from both ends.

Guess there is a reason no one asks to shoot my gun...
