I just repaired a 2nd Mod Maynard with a severe headspace problem. The headspace on this particular carbine was .053". I milled the frame similar to a 1st Mod and made a block that screws in place to set the barrel back the proper amount. The screw does not go through so it is not visible from the outside nor with the barrel assembled to the frame. I had to lengthen the elongated hole in the front lug to let the barrel come back farther. It should be good for many years of skirmishing now. I showed this repair to John Holland, head of the small arms committee and he gave it his blessing. Here's a picture of the repair.
