Anyone ever see rear sights like this one? Early type 2 with SN 1606. Moves to either position. Guessing 100 or 200 yds. also anyone know how to make the pics smaller?...
Thanks,
Bob

The base looks like original type, as I thought sporters had a smaller base. Maybe someone just replaced the leafs? Both the sight & base have matching patina to the barrel/receiver, so guessing it was done when rifle was relatively new?

Ok more pics. The sight base has a sideways "M" on the left side. This is an early type 2 -I've seen later type 2's with an upright "N" on the left side. Guessing the base is original & someone replaced the original leafs with this strange leaf. It does appear to be very old, no markings on it.
thanks

Think I figured it out. This is a musket 2 leaf sight that was cut thinner so it would fit in a Maynard sight base. As I looked at the 2nd last pic posted, you can see one side of the leaf has a border on it & the other side doesn't. Should have borders on both sides.
Wonder which rifles had only a 2 leaf sight? I know the 1866 Winchester does. Think an earlier musket has the 2 leaf?
Ballards and Wessons had a L 2 leaf sight. Pretty sure they are narrower. The Springfield also went from a three in 1863 to a two, L shaped 2 leaf in 1864. My two cents thinks it be an 1855 rifle reworked leaf. They were 3 leaf sights with the same big radius cut at the top. Someone took the top smaller leaf and cut / modified one side.

Maybe looks more like a Wesson, because the radius cut doesnt extend all the way to the end, like in the springfield.
