Question on Euroarms London Armory Company Enfield Musketoon

I spotted a Euroarms London Armory Co Enfield Musketoon in .58 cal today. The gun is used, and it appears to not have been fired much. The rifling has no trace of rust, but the hammer is a bit loose, and when in half cock it can be pushed forward without touching the trigger. I cannot tell if maybe just one of the screws needs to be tightened up or not. On full cock the hammer is solid, but there is a bit of play with the hammer front and back, nothing side to side. The gun is cheap enough at $250 considereding Dixie is selling the same gun for $650.

I'd go for it at $250. It can be repaired.

Are you able to remove the lock for inspection? It might be something as simple as a loose stirrup or tumbler screw. The worst case scenario would be that you may have to buy a tumbler and stirrup. At $250, you might have to put no more than $50 into new lock parts to make it work.

I picked this gun up today and when I got it home tried to see why the hammer wouldn't stay on half cock. I noticed the tang screw cranked down very tight so I backed it off about 1 1/2 turns and walla, now the hammer stays put. There is no grittiness in the trigger and I checked for push off with the hammer in half and full cock, nothing. The screw holding the hammer was also a bit loose so I snugged that up. No more play. While the gun isn't mint, getting a gun that sells new at $650 for $250 isn't too shabby. I think Sunday I'll take her out and see how she shoots.

Since the tang screw was overtigtened you might want to bed the barrel or at least shim the breech. I have an original 1863 Remington with an absolute mint bore, it would not group no matter which bullet or powder charge. I placed some shim stock under the breech and at each band, it shoots one hole from a rest now.

http://www.lrml.org/ has info on non epoxy bedding of English longarms.They do things a bit diffrent over the pond.ISTR a good bit of info on shimming up crushed wood under a tang.

Or is it just that you are too frugal to pay for the epoxy bedding?

I prefer full length bedding my self.But to just try somthing out there are other methods that will work.Some people are intimidated to try epoxy bedding. I have been toying on doing a u-tube vid on bedding...Once time keeps getting in the way

Here is the first one I did some years ago on a 55 rifle I built.I used West system boat epoxie. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/ .Nice stuff to work with.They have great tech support also.





I should of had the breech end of the barrel mounted up a bit higher as the forward lock screw hit the barrel and needed to be relieved a bit.
