Rifling twists in C.W. era shoulder arms?

Hello:

Am searching for authoritative documentation about the rifling twist rates in both Federal and Confederate arsenal produced and contract purchased rifles and carbines to learn if twists were in full or fractions of an inch. And then if only in even numbers such as 36, 48, 60, 72, etc, why "even numbers"?

Measuring twists can involve errors that result in fractions of an inch. Those that members have measured in their rifles and shared with me are frequently in fractions that are rounded to the next full inch. So far, from the very few twist rates that I have seen in books, the rates are in full, even numbered inches, but no references or rationale were included.

Another approach might be the specifications for the rifling twist guide bars on arsenal or contractor machinery.

So, can anyone please share documentation/references?
