To All:
I have a very gently used Lyman Minnie mould in the size of .557. I actually forget what I had it for! I am am now looking for a round ball mould. I have a Richmond with a Whitacre .577 bore and to keep active over the winter, I would like to shoot in a few "round ball" shoots over the winter. So, I am looking for a round all mould to use with a .577 bore.
Also, any suggestions as to powder loads for a round ball out of a Whitacre barrel? I know that the riffling is not ideal for a round ball, I am just looking for a ball park guess. I am using bed sheet for my patches, so perfect accuracy is not the prime objective.
Now for a long shot, I may be interested in a .54 flintlock, I have a project Plymouth rifle that I may trade, but no guarantees...

Bryan,

For round ball, you will need a .565 or so mold and .015 patching. Load should start at about 65grains of FFg. The bed sheet will be too thin. Sorry that I have nothing anywhere near that diameter.

Bryan,

I don't have any mould to trade, but as for a powder charge to use for roundball, I have shot flintlocks in woodswalks, and talking with other shooters as to powder charges to use, they told me the "old timers" used the formula of 1 grain of powder per grain of ball for target, and 1.5 grains of powder per grain of ball for hunting.

Example for 50 cal.
1gr. x 50 = 50gr. for Target
1.5gr. x 50 = 75gr. for Hunting

So I would recommend 60gr. for your .577cal

1gr. x 58 = 58gr. I rounded it off to 60gr.

Hope this helps...

I have a .562 Shiloh Mould. It has four cavities and I don't think it has ever been used. How ever I am not interested in a trade but will take $50 shipped for it. Can't seem to upload a pic but will send email if you are interested.

Bryan, I believe what Mr. Miller had meant to say was "...one grain of powder per caliber of ball...", not "...per grain of ball".

John,

You got that right! We don't need another blown up gun.

Bryan, buy the 562 mold. it's close enough. You will need some sort of patch lube on the patch. just try good old miracle cleaner that we use to clean out guns between relays as a start.

Thanks Mr Holland for correcting/clarifying. That's exactly exactly what I meant, "...one grain of powder per caliber of ball...", not "...per grain of ball". Thanks again for catching my error.
