So, I picked up a Wesson type 1 off gunbroker some time back (Sept) and just got around to a chamber cast.

Very odd. Measurements are:
Neck: .460
Base: .500
Length: 2.125"

Surely not a .44 wesson chamber, yet I don't see any rimfire cartridges that got that big. Still in rimfire though, looking at the hammer.

I'm thinking someone sometime back in the day must have reamed it out to .44/70 Maynard or something similar and just never did the CF conversion.

Any other thoughts as to what might be the case here? I was planning to do the CF conversion and get the CF version of the original brass from Buffaloarms, as the rifling is quite nice, but as it sits, I don't want to try to play with that much filler, and might have to get it lined and rechambered anyhow. But before I do, is there something I'm missing as to original caliber?

Thanks,

Jon

Reamed to a .56-46 spencer sporting rimfire?

Unless I am mistaken, there was also a 46 cal Ballard which used a healed bullet which sat on top of the mouth of the case. Something like a .46 long rimfire i believe. Bruce Cobb would be able to give details on it.
