Hey all;
i wanted to know about smoothbore bore`s. How many shoot a choked bore ? If so how much choke under bore size. And if you shoot no choke. Wanting to try and see which is more widely used and gives better groups at 25 and 50 yards.
Thanks

Well I've been shooting a Potsdam and an 1842. Originals. And so far as I know, neither is choked. The issue I'd have with that would be, if you choke it, you're going to either have a hard time ramming the ball home, or the ball will deform on seating and REALLY rattle around going down the barrel.

Now, with breechloading guns- i.e. shotguns- when I shoot a slug, I like a very modest choke (25% or less). But for a front stuffer, I don't see how that would work.

In fact, this is the first I've heard of it regarding muzzle loaders.

Yep it only works if you are shooting shot or buck.
I see no way it would work shooting a 42 with 69 cal round ball.

Muzzleloading smooth bores that were choked frequently had "jug" chokes, rather than a constricted muzzle type.
