Can anyone offer any advice on how to find out what unit a Burnside may have been issued to based on serial number?

I would love to research my Burnisde (and my Smith and Maynard) if at all possible.

I think it would be great to know where they may have been but have no idea if the information exists...

Thanks!

"The Horse Soldier" in Gettysburg might be able to help you out. I don't have their number handy, but you should be able to google it.

Let us know if you're successful in your quest!

Google up "Springfield Research Service."

On their website they used to have a "U.S. Martial Arms" section that allowed you to check the serial numbers of "Civil War Carbines," IF they have the serial number in the data base.

A few years ago when my son oredered a Garand from the CMP, when it came in he went to the website for Garands at Springfield Research Service and typed in the serial number.

Although a "hit" did not come in for that particular serial number, it did come up with several serial numbers in that range that was on Garands that went to a particular army unit that was shipped to Korea during the early stages of the Korean War.

Now, if you go to that website, from what I understand, you have to subscribe to a Martial Arms collectors magazine for $35.00 per year before they will let you to go to the serial number database.

Now, IF you decide to go thru that expense, then you should be able to get a "Letter of Authentication" on what Civil War unit your carbine was issued to, IF they have that serial number in their database.

Hopefully, someone on this BB will know more about how the system works now because it has been several years since my son checked the serial number of his Garand.

Good Luck!

Errrr,,,this may be true if they issued them in order. Came time to send them out the door they often just grabbed what was closest on the racks.

By serial number range Custer had 20 guns for every gun on that hill. If only they knew how to shoot the Indians wouldn't have stood ah chance.

So it may be hit or miss... oh well :-(

I did call The Horse Soldier and they do offer a serial number checking service for $20... The person who does it is going to be in this morning so I'll cross my fingers...
