Earlier i asked about converting gallager to take smith tubes and if anyone had done it. I spoke with Hoyt about this and he advised against it and assured me that if he felines it to 50 cal the brass gallager tubes would not stick. I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive but I trusted his experience. I got around to shooting the gallager today and I am more than pleased with the results. I had no problems getting cases out and accuracy was outstanding. Hoyt re lined it with a bore similar to a smith but it still takes the brass gallager tubes. One thing I did notice was that a nipple with a small hole will not set it off. Must use a nipple with a large hole like on the original a or at least that was my experience. I used 30 grains goex 2F and cow as a filler.

If I may ask, what are you using for a bullet? What twist is the Hoyt rifling?

Not sure on the twist but I can check. Hoyt said he will make it the same as most smiths. The bullet I am shooting is the moose 518390 . Its in their smith/maynard section

I'm sorry to sound stupid here, but how do you keep the .518 bullet in a Gallagher case, without falling out ?

I size them to 517 and the bullet is a very tight fit in the case. I could probably size down to 515 and it would still be a tight fit

If I remember correctly, the paper that Bob sent when he relined my Erma said the twist was 1/52.
Ian, do find it easy to clean the Gallager after shooting? What method do you use?
I wasn't certain if the flash channel presented any special issues.

Thanks,
Bob

I will take the barrel off of the lower receiver then I will place a thin piece of leather over the nipple and let the hammer rest on the leather and nipple. I will then fill the breach area with water and let that sit about 30 min or so. The fouling will come out of the receiver area really easily after that

Just a heads up..... Be sure and bring your conversion into Small Arms for a card before you skirmish with it. You have changed the way it was previously approved by changing it to using smith tubes.

YOU DON'T KNOW ?

what is the caliber of an original gallager?

I am not sure what the original cal is but its now 50. It was something close to that. The gallager is still in the original configuration as it still takes the brass gallager tubes

Looks like the originals are 50 caliber. I have both the percussion and the rimfire cartridge model and the bores look like the same diameter, also comparable to a Maynard.
