Both. The percussion Starr used a linen cartridge much like the Sharps. Later Starr's shot a 52 caliber rimfire cartridge. Richard Hill on our team shoots an original Starr very well and uses paper cartridges.

Both, kind of.

Initially they used a linen (not paper) cartrdige such as this one - http://www.horsesoldier.com/catalog/m20318.JPEG

But late in the war some Starrs were converted to or produced in rimfire, metalic cartridge of the Spencer rifle caliber.

I believe they were actually tomato(e)peels. I'm sure Mr. Kelly will correct me if I'm mistaken.

The percussion Starr Carbine could use Sharps cartridges, and in many cases, units equipped with Starr Carbines were issued Sharps cartridges.
Hence Starr Carbines used THREE types ammo: The percussion Starrs used Sharps and Starr cartridges and the metallic Starr Carbines used rimfire ammo!

You ARE wrong Sir :!: The first ones used Onion skins as they buried the first starrs extra deep in an onion field. Then they learn a better use was stakes. Ya got'ah experiment ta learn.
