I acquired one with a batch of Pietta brass cases. What bullet and powder charge are you using?

I just picked up this mould at the fall nationals...I was using the Rapine 520 with 23.5 grains of Goex 2F shot great. 50 yds. bottom of the 'V" on the rear sights......100 yds. was even with the top of the rear sight. I was wondering if the 400 gr. Moose is going to need additional powder to achieve the same results. It's been too cold to get out to the range here in Chicago..

The diameter inside of the brass cases is only .505

Tom,

I did not change the powder charge for my Smith or my Maynard. There was no change of impact going from the Rapine bullet to the Moose bullet.

The cases can be opened up if needed. I have Brass that was opened to accommodate .518 bullets

Seems like a light load to us'ns... other .50 cal muzzleloaders shoot much hotter loads.

Why is the Smith Carbine limited to about 40 grains maximum charge?

The Smith carbine is a breech loading percussion carbine. There are two styles of cartridge cases. Full and reduced capacity cases.

works for me

Hallo!

Mine did best with the .520 and 36 grains of FFF.
My wife's, with 30 grains.

Rubber cased Smith cartridges held a nominal charge of 50 grains of FF. Paper and foil wrapped (aka "metallic") , the same. Down from an 1858 linen cartridge of 63.

Well, I guess it's only 10 grains short of what most folks use for a reasonable 50 cal charge. The Smith probably doesn't need any more powder than 40 grains, with it's barrel being much shorter than most muzzleloaders.

Yeah, I am familiar with it. Obtained it this weekend, will let it go next weekend. ;)
