View Full Version : F/S H&P converted 1816 Springfield

For sale - Hewes & Phillips converted model 1816 Springfield. Lock plate is dated 1826. Metal has been cleaned. Musket two leaf rear sight. Bore has light rust but no pitting. Stock cartouche is very very light but there. Proof mark "P" on barrel. Mechanically fine with strong main spring. Name of J ROUAM and number 82 neatly stamped in 1/2" markings forward of lock on fore end. Ramrod appears to be original.

Terms of sale, cash price of $1600 with delivery to be made Saturday morning, March 15, 2014 at the Baltimore Antique Gun Show or at Fort Shenandoah in the afternoon of March 15. Sorry, I don't have a hard case big enough to ship the gun in.

Question: I did not think H&P converted 1816s had clean-out screws?

The photo's posted by Rich are in error as they are of a M-1861 Norwich contract rifle musket. He just uploaded the incorrect file.

Hewes & Phillips appears to have has two distinct contracts. The first, with New Jersey, resulted in 8,000 muskets with clean out screws and utilized surplus Remington-Maynard percussion hammers.

Interesting this is the first H&P that I have seen with tang screw completely countersink into tang. Is there any H&P markings on it like stamped on bolster. 1862 or 1863 should be stamped on tang or in front of it. This could be a H&P style conversion done by a different contractor. Rich
