The 1st model had a tang sight, patch box, and a very curved butt plate. The 2nd model had no patch box, no tang sight, and a slightly curved butt plate. My question is can a model two have the tang sight for our matches?

I bought what I thought to be an original Mod 2 recently. Turned out to be a post war Mod. 1 turned in to a sporter model made from a Mod. 1 receiver with the stock curved and a tang site added. Had a different longer barrel also. Was not legal to shoot.

No, you cannot use a tang sight on a Mod 2 Maynard. It must be used as issued -.50 caliber with a 20" barrel with barrel sights only.

You can use a tang sight on a Mod 1 as well as .36 and .50 caliber barrels in 20" or 26". It is much more versatile but much more difficult to find a shooter in a Mod 1.

Can a model 2 receiver be changed to a model 1 by changing the butt stock ? I am looking at a model 2 but my eyes would like the tang peep.

No, a longer explanation because 1st models have very different hammers, nipples/cones, a door on the right side of the receiver for tape primers, the barrels slip onto the barrel hinge pin, this hinge pin is longer and has a hole at its end, the barrel slides and can be adjusted for head space ..... besides the very curved butt stock with a patch box.
