Happy New Year Fellow Skirmishers!

New Year, New Shooting Season, New Mould Releases

We are working on the .69 Wadcutter as so many of you requested at the Fall Nationals, but could use your input :

What sizes do you recommend we make them?

We are starting with the .713 that can be used in the Garibaldi, but thought there were some needed in the .678 range....

Would appreciate your replying to this thread or shooting me an email: moosette@moosemoulds.com.

Thanks for your help and continued support - and for keeping Moose busy in the shop! :)

Moosette,

If I remember correctly, my .69 M1842 rifled musket, with a Whitacre barrel used at Rapine .685, dip lubed. So I would think at .685 or maybe .687 mold might work. You might want to check with Dan Whitacre and see what he might recommend.

My Hoyt relines(2) and my Whitacre barrel are all .687 bore and I use the Rapine .685. My understanding is that Armi 1842s and Fremonts tend to have oversize bores in the .692 range that obviously would require something bigger.

A team member shoots a rifled 1842 an uses a .685" Rapine semi-wadcutter. He's looking for a mould.

gemmer is correct. The Fremonts have bore diameters in the 0.692-0.694 range. Some of the Rapine molds will drop an 0.690 bullet, but if you were going to produce some new molds I would suggest a 0.685 and a 0.695. The 0.685 will satisfy most guys who are shooting .69 caliber Hoyt relines (like Plymouths, Remington-Maynard conversions, rifled/sighted 1842 Springfields), and the 0.695 should take care of the rest who are shooting repro's like the Fremont.

My teammate's barrel is a Whitacre and shoots .685" bullets.

Thanks so much to everyone for your replies! So, for clarification...the mould is to be .685 and you can size down from there? Or, should it be larger so you can size it down to .685?

Been using a Lyman 685 and it is too small, need something bigger for the repops.
Not even close in my fremont, it never makes the same hole in the target.
I could throw a rock better.

I would think something in the 690 to 694 range.

Jon,

You might want to check with Charlie Hahn, he maybe able to open that mold up to the diameter you desire.

Gentlemen, just to add info, my Armisport Fremont was miked with three ball type hole micrometers as .6962" bore diameter, 0.7028" groove diameter.

If your molds cast out at .687 & .695 these are the two main sizes needed for our toys. We can size down from there.

I just wanted to know if the .69 Cal. wad cutter is legal to shoot with at N-SSA matches? I'm thinking of picking up one of these molds if it is. I talked with another member who claims it is legal....I just want to make sure the money I spend on the mold isn't going to waste if I can't use it in musket/ individual matches

The way the rules are written:
22.1.1 SMOOTHBORE PROJECTILES
a. Projectiles for smoothbore matches shall be round ball only.

b. In a smoothbore firearm, the ball may be wrapped with aluminum foil, with or without grease; but the use of patches, paper or cloth, or over-powderwads or plastic wads is prohibited

I see that you are confused as to where the 69 wadcutter could be used. You are correct as to smoothbores having to shoot round balls.
The wad cutters and other various mould for 69 cal. minis are for the rifled 69 caliber muskets out there, including Fremont's and rifled 42's. I hope that this clarified the situation for you.
