Anyone have experience with Swiss powder in a Shiloh? I know 2F is the standard, but I understand people have had some success with 1 1/2 F as well. What are the advantages to using this size powder? Any thoughts or observations appreciated!
Thanks,

John.

You can use 1 1/2, 2 or 3 F, all will shoot with the proper charge. The compromises you will have to address are fouling, recoil pressure plate gas cutting, and cost. Personally I load with 50 grains of Goex FFg. The same load works in my carbine and infantry rifle and it shoots lights out across the course.

I am shooting 45 grains of 3F GOEX in my Shiloh Sharps. The GOEX shoots clean for me, cleaning is done after shooting 30 or 35 rounds when finished shooting for the day.

Use 42 of 3F goex with harder lead in my shiloh. Wish I could just hold it still! My brother shot it today and had a 91 and he hasn't shot for 5 years. We won't talk about my targets. Plus Swiss is just too expensive for my pocket book.

Load for a Shiloh Model 1858 Sharps Infantry rifle in .50 caliber:

Powder: 45 grains of Swiss FFFg
Bullet: from NEI mold #359, cast 1/20 tin/lead, un-sized
Lube: Lee Shaver's black powder cartridge lube
Hard plastic tubes, not paper or cardboard cartridges

I made Distinguished with this rifle and this load. When last I was at the historical center, I believe that the 50 yard score I shot with it was still either first or second.

Don,

I am familiar with your shooting ability and somehow, I feel that fine record score may have at least as much to do with your ability as your load. We all aspire to your level of individual marksmanship. Well, at least I do!
