I was benching my Enfield 3 band rifle musket today using Swiss 1 1/2 F powder. My first 3 shots were touching in the x ring. Great! I thought, then the next 5 went into a ragged hole at 9:00 about 2 inches from the first group. The last three shots were touching but about 4 inches lower than the second group. What is going on? Is the barrel heating? I had fired ~20 shots thee day before and I hadn't cleaned it except for using a wire brush. Could fouling do this? I could see if the musket wasn't grouping but the groups were great just shifting.
Thanks for your help.

Minie ball impact can change one inch for 0.008 movement of the sight. In other words, it might have been a changing sight picture. It doesn't take much to move a sight by 0.008. Gook luck

Try it off hand. That is, after all what we do.

Make sure your barrel bands and tang screw are tight, also.
