Is it legal to put a dovetail front sight on an original "artillery" model Springfield?

To expand on Rich's answer a bit, once you have achieved your windage the front sight must be fixed in place so as to not be adjustable. If there is any of the dovetail base overhanging the barrel it must be filed to match the contour of the barrel. When finished the front sight base, as mounted on the barrel, must look like an original from the armory. If you look closely at an original rifle musket you will see the front sight bases are all dovetailed and brazed in place.
